Through a large network of volunteers, we seek to support our children and all their endeavors at Sanderson. From the collection of dues and several money making activities, primarily a No Fuss Fundraiser, we are able to support projects such as Teacher Appreciation, Open House, publication of newsletters to parents and students, physical building needs, Cultural Arts Programs, etc. Look for the PTA Meeting schedule in the SHS Newsletter. Parents are welcome to attend these meetings and we encourage all of you to join us as we work to continue the proud tradition of excellence at Sanderson. The Academic Boosters Club seeks to recognize and promote student excellence in school-related activities. They give a “pat on the back” to students who excel academically, to those who consistently work up to their potential, and to those who give that “extra effort” by improving their classroom performance. Accolades to students include honor roll bulletin boards, "bag tags" and three scholarships for Sanderson seniors. The Sanderson Band Boosters are dedicated to the development of a quality band program as well as the development of an enthusiastic spirit for music education. Through fruit and flower drives, yard sales, etc., we are able to offer financial support for numerous projects (costumes, trips, instruments, props, etc.). Our children in return share their talents with everyone at football games, concerts, musicals, competitions, etc. Meetings are held the second Monday of every month. FRIENDS OF THE PERFORMING ARTS The Performing Arts Boosters are parents and friends dedicated to the development of an outstanding vocal music program at Sanderson. A variety of fund-raising projects such as “Broadway Comes to Sanderson” occur throughout the year to provide financial support for our young people. In turn, they contribute to the total school program through their concerts, musicals, competitions, etc. The Sanderson Junior ROTC Boosters Club is a parent organization that supports the Junior Air Force ROTC program. The general moral, mental, and physical wellbeing of the cadets and members are a primary focus. Through membership fees and limited fund-raisers, we support field trips to nearby bases, cadet participation in drill meets, parades, naturalization ceremonies, Special Olympics, and a number of other community service projects. Sanderson's BA is a partnership between local businesses and SHS that provide resources, opportunities, and knowledge to help our students make the connection between classroom learning and the skills needed for their future. Through the BAs work-based and school-based activities students have opportunities to job shadow, attend Pathway Fairs, tour businesses, gain interviewing and resume writing skills, and participate in internships and apprenticeships. The BA supports teachers by providing technology training, curriculum integration projects, and curriculum based guest speakers. Contact the office for meeting dates and times. The Academy of Finance program offers students the unique opportunity to gain specialized preparation in the field of finance, while they complete their normal course curriculum. Affiliated with and administered by the National Academy Foundation (NAF) based in New York City, the Academy of Finance operates as a "school within a school" in partnership with local businesses. The Sanderson Athletics Club is an organization of parents and friends interested in maintaining unequaled athletic programs for the students of Sanderson High School. It provides support through funding needs (buses, equipment, facilities), organizing and sponsoring athletic banquets, and concession stands at athletic events, etc. Funds are raised through membership fees and the sale of advertisements in athletic programs. The Club holds its meetings on the third Monday of each month at 7:00 p.m. in the school library. Everyone is invited to attend! This group was started in October 2002 to help keep parents, students and others aware of what is going on in and around the Sanderson Community. Sign up to receive the SHS Weekly along with other pertinent emails about upcoming events and information of interest. To join send an email to: SHScommunity-subscribe@yahoogroups.com SENIOR CLASS PARENT DONATION LETTER Usually a letter is sent out during the summer between Junior and Senior year asking for donations from families of Seniors to cover expenses for Senior Breakfast and Graduation Reception. These two events are totally paid for by the families of Seniors. Sponsored, paid for and coordinated by Senior parents. Held early in the morning before the first day of school for all students who are seniors. Typically held at North Hills Club. Students are asked to decorate their cars and arrive at the club for lots of food for breakfast and door prizes. After filling their stomachs and getting pumped up for the start of a wonderful Senior year they parade in a big procession to the Sanderson parking lot. Parents and family members stand along the route with signs and a large balloon arch welcomes them to school. A great way to kick off the final year of high school. Sponsored by SHS Student Council. Held after the first home football game in the small gym and usually lasting until 12 midnight. No candy, wrapping paper, etc. to sell. Sponsored by the PTSA to raise funds to cover the expenses and projects of the PTSA. Letters are mailed out to families of Sanderson students requesting donations. This has been very popular and productive in the last couple of years. Held in Gregson Stadium. This event is staffed by volunteer band students, band parents, and alumni band students and parents. One of our new sponsors is the City of Raleigh Convention Center and Visitors Bureau. Pepsi has been one of our longstanding corporate sponsors. This year the format is changing. We will have the preliminary competitions during the day. Then there will be an awards assembly. The top bands in each class (probably 3 or 4 classes) and the best scoring bands overall will be invited back for a finals competition that evening. Home football game. A court is nominated and voted on by the student body. At half-time of the game the court is presented with the girls arriving in convertibles and met by their escorts and the Homecoming Queen is announced. Each Class (Fr, So, Jr, Sr) has a banner on display depicting the theme of homecoming. The winning class banner is announced at half-time. The school week of Homecoming. Typically, there are assigned days of the week like: Tacky Day, Old School, Favorite Team, Tropical, and Friday is Big Red Day. Students and teachers try to out do one another with their costumes for the day. Sponsored by SHS Student Council and held during Spirit Week. This is Seniors against the underclassmen or underclassgirls. Girls get in the action by playing flag football. Entertainment at half time has varied in years past with an all guy beauty pageant, guys' tug of war, dance competitions and even guy cheerleaders. Held on Friday during school before the Homecoming game that night. Student production. Auditions are held for parts. Fundraiser for the Drama Department.
A mini shopping spree with vendors from
the community and school. Held in the two gyms, gym lobby and cafeteria. This
is a major fund-raiser for the Junior Class Council. All Class Councils
participate and raise funds also. Many of the school clubs have booths and sale
items. This requires a tremendous amount of help from the parents and students
of the entire student body of Sanderson. (It beats selling wrapping paper!) Sponsored by SHS Student Council. Sanderson has won for the past few years and has a tradition to uphold. Lots of activities go into raising money and food for the NC Food Bank. A few of the activities have been: penny war, bash the car, competitions among homerooms, etc. Senior Students must be a member of the PTSA by January 5th to be eligible. Applications are judged by a panel of judges from outside the Sanderson Community. These scholarships are intended to reward students who have been consistent in pursuing their academics, have represented and served the Sanderson community, and have also participated in activities to improve our surrounding community. The money may be used at a technical or trade school, community college or four-year college or university. Applications will be available in the Career Center. ACADEMIC BOOSTERS SCHOLARSHIPS Three different scholarships are awarded to selected applicants for the sole purpose of assisting these individuals in their pursuit of continuing education. Students are ask to submit an application containing information on school-related honors and activities, out-of-school activities, work experience, and an essay. Applications will be available in the Career Center. Sponsored by Student Council. Students fill out a survey about themselves and then they are matched up with potential students with common interests and likes. It is a good idea and fun to keep the ones from each year and see how things change and if the ones in earlier years do come true. Put on by the Senior Class. Skits
and performances are interspersed with performances by other students. The
Winterfest Court with representative from each grade level is nominated and
voted on by the Student Body and presented at the assembly. Parents are invited
to attend. Sponsored by the Senior Class for the entire student body. Tickets are sold at school. Held in late January or early February. Usually held at the Shrine Club on Leadmine Road. It takes lots of manpower to pull this event off but makes wonderful memories. As a learning tool for years to come the Freshman and Sophomore classes are assigned the bathrooms to decorate. Students not on Student Council or Class Councils are invited and encouraged to help. Parents are invited and encouraged to help with this project also. Late Saturday afternoon or early evening is a great time for parents to come up and see the decorations. You will not believe that you are in the school. Sunday is clean up day.
